Crunchy, golden-brown waffles have always been a favorite of mine, and now they’re a hit with my fur baby, Pluto, too. Back in high school, my mom would make waffles for me on the weekends, and we’d curl up together to watch my favorite movie. It’s a tradition I still cherish today, except now I share those cozy moments with Pluto by my side.

Recently, I realized that my large waffle maker was too bulky to bring along whenever we traveled. So, I decided to grab a Dash mini waffle maker from Amazon—affordable and much easier to carry. I haven’t used it yet, but I’m excited to give it a try. Once I whip up some waffles with it, I’ll definitely share my thoughts with all of you here in my blogging family!

Meet My Pluto:

Before we dive into the recipes, I’m excited to introduce you to the newest member of my family, Pluto. He’s a lively Labrador with a big heart and an even bigger appetite, and his love for food has inspired me to create special, healthy recipes just for him. This one, in particular, has been fully approved by my little Pluto, and I’m sure your dog will love it too!

While many people experiment with waffle recipes involving hot dogs or different spices, I like to keep things simple. It’s always best to avoid unnecessary ingredients and focus on what’s healthy for your pet—just like my vet advised. When making treats for your furry friend, always ensure you’re using dog-safe ingredients. Here are a few general tips to keep in mind before we get into the recipe specifics:

  • Avoid toxic ingredients: Steer clear of chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic.
  • Use whole grains: Whole wheat flour or oat flour are great alternatives to refined flour.
  • Incorporate vegetables and fruits: Pumpkin, sweet potato and applesauce are fantastic additions.
  • Mind the dairy: Some dogs are lactose intolerant, so consider using non-dairy milk like coconut milk.

Homemade Pumpkin Dog Waffle Recipes:

Pumpkin is not only delicious but also great for dogs’ digestive health. You can read about the health benefits of pumpkin in my previous blogs. For this recipe, you need simple ingredients.

Healthy Pumpkin Gelatin Dog Treats

In a large bowl take a cup of whole wheat flour, and add ½ teaspoon baking powder. Baking powder will help your waffle to rise.

Now add  ½ cup pumpkin puree, ¼ cup applesauce, and 1 egg in dry ingredients and mix them very well. I always prefer to make pumpkin puree and applesauce at home because it’s guilt-free and satisfies me that I am giving a healthy diet to my Pluto. But if you are using a store-bought then always prefer a good brand and they must be unsweetened.

If you feel the mixture is too thick you can add some water to get the desired consistency. I usually add 3 to 4 tablespoons of water as I think it makes waffles crunchier.

Now your batter is ready, brush some oil on your waffle maker pour this batter into your waffle maker, and cook till the waffles turn into golden brown color. Allow the waffles to cool before serving them to your dog.

Banana Waffle Recipe:

I used to make pumpkin waffles for all my dogs, but one day, I felt like trying something new for a different experience. As I was browsing for inspiration, I hooked upon a recipe that combined waffles with applesauce—and it turned out to be a total hit! The result was so delicious, it’s now my go-to treat for my special furry friends.

Here’s how I make it: In a large bowl, mix a cup of oatmeal with a pinch of cinnamon. I always sieve the dry ingredients for a smoother texture—it really makes a difference. In a separate bowl, mash a ripe banana with a fork and mix in one large egg and unsweetened applesauce (or peanut butter, if you prefer).

Once the wet ingredients are ready, combine them with the dry mixture and stir until everything is well blended. If the batter feels too thick, gradually add water until it reaches the right consistency. Lightly grease your waffle maker with oil or non-stick spray, pour in the batter, and cook until the waffles turn a perfect golden brown. Be sure to let them cool completely before serving them to your dog.

How Many Treats Can I Give My Dog?

While these dog waffle recipes are made with dog-friendly ingredients, still remember that these treats should be added in your dogs diet occasionally. You need to be very careful about the ingredients and their quantity of ingredient use during the recipe. Treats, including these waffles, should account for only 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Small dogs (up to 20 lbs): 1/4 to 1/2 waffle per day
  • Medium dogs (20-50 lbs): 1/2 to 1 waffle per day
  • Large dogs (50+ lbs): 1 to 1.5 waffles per day

Storing Ideas Of Dog Waffle Treats:

To keep your homemade dog waffles fresh, follow these storage tips:

  • Refrigeration: You can refrigerate the homemade waffles up to 5 days in an air tight container.
  • Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the waffles. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze individually before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag.  Simply thaw in the refrigerator or microwave for a few seconds before serving. You can freeze it up to one month.
  • Portioning: Consider pre-portioning the waffles before freezing. This way, you can easily grab the right amount for a treat without having to thaw an entire batch.

Making homemade waffles for your dog is a wonderful way to show them how much you care. With healthy ingredients and a bit of love, these treats will surely become a favorite for your furry friend. Always introduce new foods gradually and in moderation. Enjoy baking and sharing these delightful waffles with your dog!
